Green tea may help keep gums healthy

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – A cup of green tea per day may help keep gum disease at bay, a new study suggests.

Researchers found that among middle-aged Japanese, the odds of having gum disease declined as the men’s intake of green tea rose.

For each daily cup they drank, the risk of having signs of gum disease — including receding, easily bleeding gums — inched downward, the researchers report in the Journal of Periodontology.

The findings do not mean, however, that green tea is a substitute for seeing the dentist. The relationship between green tea and lower odds of gum disease was fairly weak, Dr. Yoshihiro Shimazaki, one of the researchers on the study, told Reuters Health.

Good overall oral care, Shimazaki said, is what’s most important.

For the study, Shimazaki and his colleagues at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan, examined 940 men between the ages of 49 and 59 for signs of gum disease. The men also completed a questionnaire on smoking and drinking habits, tooth-brushing habits and green tea intake.

In general, the study found, the odds of gum disease declined as green tea intake climbed, even with the other lifestyle factors considered. The researchers did, however, lack information on the men’s overall diet, and past studies have suggested that certain foods and nutrients — like whole grains, fiber and vitamin C — may protect against gum disease.

If green tea itself does combat gum disease, it may be because of its concentration of antioxidant compounds called polyphenols, according to Shimazaki.

Gum disease arises from bacterial infection, and lab research suggests that green tea polyphenols can inhibit those germs and the damage they cause.

Dealing with Stomach Flu

Everyone in my family has the stomach flu right now.  I looked it up on the internet and it said to avoid solid foods and drink small amounts of clear liquids.  I did that and started to feel more comfortable in less than 24 hours, but if I do attempt to eat a small amount of solid food, my stomach starts cramping again.  I’ve started sipping some green juice when I get hungry and that seems to help.  I’m out of town and away from my juicer so I am drinking Green Machine by Naked Juice.  There is a Starbucks on the next block where I can conveniently access the juice.  I am also drinking hot and iced green tea and lots of water.

We are currently in NYC and this was planned as a big eating trip but that’s not working out so well right now.  I am going to try to find some oatmeal for breakfast tomorrow to gradually work my way back towards eating solids.  Tomorrow is my partner’s birthday and he has some big plans for how he wants to celebrate it – including lunch and dinner at nice restaurants.  This will be challenging.

More on Matcha

Today I was on a search for loose matcha powder because I want a thicker tea than what I can get from using tea bags.  I came across a great site called “TeazOnline.com”.  They had more info about the health benefits of drinking matcha as well as the benefits of drinking green tea in general.  This is from their website:

Because the leaves themselves are imbibed, brewed Matcha contains higher concentrations of vitamins and antioxidants than most other teas, green, herbal, or otherwise. According to researches done in Japan, brewed Matcha contains nearly 10 times the polyphenols and antioxidants of regular teas, 2 times the antioxidants of a glass of red wine, approximately 9 times the beta-carotene of spinach, and 4 times that of carrots.

Wow. Not only that, but also:

  • Significantly increases energy (over 8 to 10 hours) without the caffeine “jitters”.
  • Improves mental alertness (L-theanine component)
  • Increases calmness and reduces stress (L-theanine component)
  • Boosts metabolic rate by 35-40%
  • Powerful “Anti-Aging” activity due to the super-charged antioxidants
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Decreases level of LDL or “bad”cholesterol
  • Minimizes symptoms of PMS
  • “Super” cancer-fighting and cancer-preventative activity (due to extremely high levels of polyphenols and catechins)
  • Eases constipation due to high level of easily absorbable dietary fiber
  • Stabilizes blood sugar levels
  • Powerful anti-biotic and anti-viral activity
  • Strong blood detoxifier and alkalyzer, due to the high Chlorophyll content

Naturally,  I put in my order after reading all of that!  I can’t wait to receive my shipment!  I usually drink green tea lattes with soymilk, so I will probably brew a strong tea with a small amount of hot water and then add a packet of splenda and some soymilk.  Yum!

Macha Green Tea

I have made it a rule to try to have a macha green tea latte everyday because the macha powder is so good for you in so many ways. Usually I get my fix at Starbucks but I recently discovered a more economic way to get my fix. There is a tea brand called The Republic of Tea that produces a Double Green Matcha Tea which is a combination of Chinese green tea leaves and macha tea powder. It is more expensive than other commercially available brewing teas but is well worth it I brew mine with a small amount of steaming hot water and then add warm soymilk to make a green tea latte at home.
